What Is Utokkaphai (Flood)?
Utokkaphai comes from "utok" meaning water and "phai" meaning danger, so it means a hazard caused by floods, or by water overflowing river banks and inundating homes, roads and farmland.

How many types of floods are there?
Floods in Thailand can be grouped into 4 types, each with a different speed and level of danger

What causes floods?
DDPM divides the causes of floods into 2 groups
- Natural causes Continuous heavy rain from tropical cyclones or low-pressure systems, high tides that slow river drainage into the sea, and earthquakes or tsunamis
- Human causes Deforestation that leaves soil unable to hold water, structures that block waterways, and inadequate water management
Severe floods often come from both at once, for example heavy rain during high tide, so water drains more slowly than usual.
What are the warning signs of a flood?
DDPM advises watching for these signs, especially if your home is near a stream or at the foot of a hill
- River or stream levels rising unusually fast
- Stream water turning muddy
- Wild animals fleeing in panic
- Heavy rain for several hours

What to do before, during and after a flood

| Before the flood | Prepare essentials for 3–5 days, put important documents in waterproof bags, move valuables to higher places and follow warning announcements |
| During the flood | Evacuate by safe routes, do not drive through floodwater, do not wade through fast currents, and cut the power at home before water comes in |
| After the flood | Wear waterproof boots, watch out for contaminated water and venomous animals that fled into the house, and have an electrician check the wiring before turning the power back on |
